Abstract
The project examines the phenomenon of obesity and its impact on public health. Its purpose is to inform the people about the consequences of obesity which are characterized as a serious threat for public health in modern societies. The main finding of the project is that prevention such as physical activity, balanced healthy nutrition, and nutritional education is the most suitable way of having a healthy and a long-term living. The project is separated in three main parts. The first chapter deals with the meaning of obesity and the criteria (indexes) that are used for its measurement. Also, in the first chapter it is referred the frequency of obesity in Greece and the dimensions of obesity in other countries of the world. At the end of the chapter are mentioned the causes of obesity in each category such as the effect of environment, the utility of medicines, heredity etc. The second chapter focuses on the consequences of obesity in people's health. Studies that took place abroad confirm that obesity is responsible for the increase and predisposition of serious maladies. The third chapter points out the ways, which can encounter obesity not only from clinical view but also from dietetics side. The latter is considered especially efficient because it can be used as a tool of prevention against obesity.
