Throughout this dissertation the term of leadership is approached and the different theories that have been developed through the years are analyzed. Due to the fact that leadership is a multifaceted aspect, at the present time, researchers have not
been able to a definitive style that is able to describe the ideal leader. Within this thesis, leadership and its role in the shipping industry is particularly assessed, with the aim of determining what form of leadership is applied so successfully by the Greek
ship-owners. Effective leadership however, is dependant upon various circumstances and is a result of numerous variables and factors. To this end, the history of the Greek ship-owners was studied and the structure of shipping companies was examined. Furthermore, the various decisions that leaders have to make regarding the management and operation of their companies are described. The research that was done in various employees of shipping companies led to the conclusion that in a typical Greek shipping company, the ship-owner makes the decisions after considering the information and opinions received by the various heads of departments. Hence, the participative style of leadership is followed since the staff is encouraged to provide their ideas and opinions (thus playing a significant role within the company) whilst the leader provides the final say in the matters discussed. Evidently, this style of leadership has been proven highly effective, given the worldwide stature of the Greek shipping industry.
