Abstract
Nowadays, chronic renal failure is one of the biggest threats to global health. For this reason, many are those who call it "plague of the 21st century." It is a condition that leads to progressive loss of renal function over time. In Greece, 8.000 people now receive dialysis, while many of them proceed to transplant. The purpose of this MSc Dissertation is to highlight through a set of real data those risk factors associated with the occurrence of renal dysfunction and how evolves over time. Regarding our data, derived from study ATTIKH, which is a recording epidemiological study and observation of the population's general health and of the factors which can be associated with the occurrence of a malfunction of the kidneys. Α first tool we used in order to identify potential associations of the various factors with stages of renal failure is Pearson's X test for independence. Then we were led in the method of correspondence analysis in order to display correlations in the form of graphs. Finally we applied the model of ordinal logistic regression, which helped in finding those factors that predict perfectly the variable considered on stage of renal failure. Finally, we conclude that increased prices in the measurement of urea and of C - reactive protein in the blood concentration leading to increased probabilities of a renal dysfunction. Also greater risk of renal dysfunction occurs in the age group 61-89 years and mainly women. Moreover, the improvement in their quality of life leads to improvement development of renal dysfunction. On the other hand, it was observed that body mass index (bmi) does not seem to vary significantly depending on the stage of renal failure.
