THE AIM OF THE THESIS IS THE ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF THE POST-WAR CHANGES IN THE INTERNATIONAL DIVISION OF LABOUR IN SHIPPING AND OF THE POSITION OF THE GREEK FLEET IN THIS CONTEXT. THE THESIS SUGGESTS THE EXISTENCE OF A FEED-BACKRELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE PROLONGATION AND DEEPENING OF MARITIME CRISIS ENTRANCE OF LESS DEVELOPED COUNTRIES IN SHIPPING. THE DEGREE OF SPECIALIZATION IN THE MOST DYNAMIC MAIN TONNAGE CATEGORIES IS CONSIDERED AND PROVEN ESSENTIAL AFTER THE SECOND WORLD WAR FOR THE POSITION OF THE VARIOUS-ESSETIALLY OECD-FLEETS IN THE INTERNATIONAL HIERARCHY IN SHIPPING AS WELL AS FOR THE POSITION OF THE GREEKFLEET SUPPORTED ALSO BY MAINLY A FAVOURABLE FIXED COST. HOWEVER WITH THE EMERGENCE OF THE CRISIS THIS SCHEME, AS WELL AS THE RESORT OF THE TRADITIONAL MARITIME COUNTRIES TO THE FLAGS OF CONVENIENCE, PROVED INEFFECTIVE IN PREVENTING THE RISE OF THE DEVELOPING COUNTRIES EVEN IN THE MORE ADVANCED TONNAGE CATERGORIES A POSITION OF THE HISHER-COST TRADITIONAL MARITIME COUNTRIES. THE GREEK REGISTRY, OWING AGAIN TO MAINLY ITS COMPARATIVELY LOWER FIXED COST, RESISTED SUCCESFULLY UNTIL THE BEGINNING OF THE EIGHTIES BUT THE NEXT PHASE OF DEPRESSION TO ITS SHRINKAGE AND THE COMPARATIVELY INCREASED TENACITY OF THE GREEK- OWNED FLEET TOTHE CRISIS WAS MADE POSSIBLE BY THE RETURN TO OPEN REGISTRIES. THE SIGNS OF INCREASE OF THE GREEK REGISTRY AS WELL AS THE STABILIZATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL DIVISION WHEN FREIGHT LEVELS WERE RESTORED CORROBORATES FURTHER THE CENTRAL HYPOTHESIS OF THE THESIS.
