The maritime transport policy has undergone significant changes in Greece, especially in the coastal area. There is a "concerted action" taken by the Greek government to develop a sustainable network of marine transport on the islands. This action is based on new system's approach, taking into account the imminent liberation of coastal services. The previous practice considered the ship as the main point of regulation and control. An important element of this new action plan is the project entitled "The development of the national transport system to the sea" (DSTMS). The main objective of this program is the democratic modernization and rationalization of the management of Greek coastal system, achieving national cohesion, quality, fleet renewal, employment and compliance with EU policies. It is important to emphasize support for the development of domestic Maritime Transport (DSTMS) to government strategic planning. The future system of maritime transport, based on the principles and knowledge gained through the program DSTMS, are designed to meet the needs of the Greek people in the 21st century.
