The aim of this dissertation was to analyze the contribution of sea transportation in air pollution. Because of sulphur and nitrogen that are contained in ship fossil fuels, their combustion causes air pollution, in the sense that the substances produced are mainly responsible for causing the Greenhouse effect, as well the expansion of the Ozone Hole. In order to reduce the effects of shipping duel emissions, which are expected to further increase, given the rapid growth in seaborne trade, certain directives have been developed within an international context (International Maritime Organization -IMO), as well as a community (European Union) and a domestic one (Greek shipping legislation). In order for the problem of air pollution from ships to be faced, shipping companies may take a number of technical or operational measures, as well as use alternative fuels and biofuels.
