In this Master's thesis, energy efficient routing protocols in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are presented. A WSN consists of battery powered sensor nodes with limited energy resources. For this reason, energy efficiency is essential in order to increase network lifetime. Several routing protocols have been proposed to manage the op¬eration of nodes in an energy efficient manner. After a brief introduction to WSNs and to the most known protocols, we present a protocol for energy efficient rout¬ing in wireless sensor networks. Its performance is compared with that of the well known hierarchical protocol LEACH (Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy). Simulation results show that the proposed protocol outperforms LEACH in terms of network lifetime and average energy consumption.
