The main purpose of this thesis is the analysis of the Northern Sea Route, and the perspectives that exist in the area as a result of the melting ice, with particular emphasis to be given to the ports of the Northern Sea Route. The Arctic is composed by five nations, and as a matter of fact, difficulties arise as for the jurisdiction rights. On the other hand, this Arctic meltdown has confirmed the assumptions as for the richness of the deep sea resources in the area, and the Arctic has been made a pole attraction for many foreign funds, as well as for the different surrounding nations, that aim to favorably operate in the area. The development of shipping though faces hard time due to the lack of a certain regulatory frame that stresses nations to have territorial claims in the area. Part of the dissertation will describe the geography of the area, and the different sea passages for the information of the reader, as well as the first commercial shipping operations so far. To the last section the main ports will be presented, their characteristics, and contribution in the development of the shipping market.
