The present dissertation exams the needs of the world sea trade and is targeting at the rules that govern them. Especially it will exhibit the new regulations of Rotterdam Rules and compare the differences of them with the previous Hague’s Visby Rules.
Particularly, the study begins with an historical retrospection of the Sea trade, its evolution and the transport conditions that existed. It is continuing with the legislative frame of sea transportation. An analytical presentation of the progress of the rules, as the participated countries at each of them is following. The differences of each rule are mentioned, just like the problems that arise from each of them. The third chapter is focusing at the main document of transportation, the Bill of Lading.
The function, the procedure of issuing, the details, the problems and the substitute of it are mentioned.
The fourth chapter checks the basic rules, Hague’s Visby Rules and Rotterdam Rules, in reference with the Bill of Lading. Especially there is an analysis of the Articles of each rules regarding to the Bill of Lading, which finally presents the advantage and disadvantage, in reference with the period they affect. At the end of this dissertation, the conclusions are submitted, from which the needs for upgrading and modernizing, at the carriage of goods by sea, are visible. The urgency
for combined transportation is necessary, for which the basis has been set.
