This paper is the result of an attempt to improve Statistics Education for both the teacher and the student. As part of this effort, the difficulties encountered by students were investigated, as they come into contact with the lessons of Statistics and Probability. The objective of this paper is to set out the factors that can contribute (either positively or negatively) in the development of a sound statistical way of thinking. Initially, the so-called stochastic way of thinking is introduced, where its components are studied, also in contrast with the deterministic way of thinking. The problems in the teaching of Statistics and the most common mistakes and difficulties encountered in the object are recorded. In addition, certain factors that may differentiate the degree of learning the object are presented, and some suggestions for improving the teaching of Statistics are indicated. In order to achieve the objective of this paper, a survey was conducted, where students in the Department of Economics of University of Piraeus took place. Through the survey the effectiveness of the learning process was evaluated. The students participated in a laboratory course, they were put to written tests, as well as they answered a questionnaire generally about their attitude towards Statistics. After proper processing of the collected data, some conclusions were reached, which are believed that can aid the teacher to make pedagogical decisions based on real data.
