Piracy has always been a threat to the smooth conduct of trade by sea, so a quick flashback feels necessary to evaluate modern pirate incidents. Today, in the year 2013, the phenomenon is localized geographically into East and West Africa, Middle East, Southeast Asia and South America, while evolving into terms of pirate tactics followed and intensity of violence. So, through the need to constantly find ways to cope with and encounter this phenomenon, governments, international and local bodies, governmental and non-governmental organizations, insurance companies and private maritime security companies are involving. Meanwhile, there is a cost through all these, whether microeconomic; which is primarily comes in for the ship owners or management companies, or macroeconomic; that basically affects the local / regional economies, or social; which mainly lies with the sailors. When observing and recording modern pirate incidents, violence and uncertainty are distinguished before any other effect. This analysis aims at a comprehensive understanding of the maritime piracy phenomenon, and thus to identify the economic costs that arise.
