The aim of this paper is to present the theoretical framework and analyze econometrically the relationship between GDP and healthcare spending. It investigates the existence of correlation between GDP per capita and healthcare expenditure per capita in selected European Union countries (Greece, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain). The statistical data come from the OECD database, cover the period 1992-2011 and are expressed in U.S. dollars, adjusted to the current Purchasing Power Parity (PPP). The Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method is set in order to estimate the linear relationship between the two variables and statistical inference is applied to the model. The results in all countries suggest that GDP, as an independent variable, is an important factor in formulating the values of healthcare expenditure.
