Abstract
This study aims to highlight the impact of the financial crisis on global shipping. To achieve this the general and the specific issues related to the birth and the causes of the 2008 crisis and its characteristics are initially presented followed by an overview of the development of international trade in recent years along with an analysis of the impact of the recession on the market and the downward trend as a result of this. The time period of 2008 - 2010 is selected, as this was the period of deep economic recession worldwide, in order to examine the influence of the crisis on the entire shipping industry in general, and more specifically on the three main shipping markets; bulk, liner and tankers market.
