Abstract

The thesis deals with the use and the performance of Information Systems at Greek maritime companies. Furthermore, their indissoluble bond and futurous trends are also presented farther. More specifically there is an analysis of maritime status in the world maritime chart and to what an extend the use and materialization of IS has assisted the Greek maritime sector in maintaining its leading stand. A report is presented in the basic characteristics of an IS. Infrastructure, architecture and applications which compose model of function which is followed by maritime companies is also introduced. Relevant to the afore mentioned is an extensive report of information and technology and communication and how substantial it is to the maritime industry. Moreover, there is a historical flashback in this field and how it has affected the way maritime firms operate. Analyzed is also the realization of IS on vessels and in relevant premises as well as applications that boost the functions of its users. Extensively detailed exemplifications of such applications and their functional, interactive mode are also given. There are also exist special notifications and the field of communication and the prevalent satellite solutions are also mentioned. Finally the latest trends for complete information Systems and Communications and their benefits or possible occurring obstacles in their realization are presented.
