The present essay aims to examine the question whether the Greek ports are green and what actions can be taken in this direction. Firstly, the characteristics of Greek Ports are described and an analysis of the terms “green ports” and “sustainable development’’ is given. Then is determined how port services cause environmental pollution and the international environmental regulations IMO and Portal are presented. Thereafter, it is analyzed the current situation of the ports of Greece, to the existence of green actions. Specifically, after a brief historical overview of ports of Piraeus and Thessaloniki’s, it is presented the green practices those two ports have taken. Afterwards, it is presented an international review of green ports of Long Beach, San Diego and Sydney. Characteristic of these three ports is that they integrate specific operating policies, according to which they succeed to be qualified as “green ports”. The third chapter ends with the presentation of some green practices from other foreign ports. Using international practices in green ports and the analysis from current situation in Greece, it is proposed a Guide in order the port of Piraeus to become “green”. The Guide includes topics concerning natural resources and environmental quality features and it can also be used as tool for drawing a comprehensive national strategy. Finally, the conclusions, about how green are the Greek ports, are presented and also what actions they can take in this direction.
