The purpose of this Diploma Thesis is the design and simulation using the electronic design automation software ADS 2008 Update 2 of microwave patch antennas and bandpass filters, and then the construction of patch antennas and one filter. The frequency that antenna transmits-receives as well as the center frequency of the filter is 2,4GHz. Besides their telecommunications applications, the antennas can be used as sensors of a radiometer, in an implementation of the microwave thermography, in a passive method of detecting cancer cells, and filter to reject unwanted frequencies. The first chapter presents the structure, key features and loss of microstrip lines. The second chapter provides the basics of antenna, analyzes the types and presents the microstrip antennas. Then, in chapter three the design and simulation of microstrip antennas with different number of elements and arrangementare presented. In the fourth chapter, the implemented antenna measurements and differences with the theoretical characteristics are discussed. In the fifth chapter an analysis of microwave filters is provided, followed by design, simulation and the measurements of the coupled line filter. Finally, the sixth chapter analyzes the basic operating principles of microwave thermography using a radiometer.
