Abstract
In this document we present the theory of intelligent agents and the fields of their applications. More specific we introduce to the concept of an agent and agent-based systems, we show the domain characteristics of an agent-based system, we introduce the main application areas in which agent technology has been successfully deployed to date, we identify the main obstacles that lie in the way of the agent system developer, and finally we introduce the multiple agents systems and the methods that they communicate each other and with their environment. We conclude that Agent-based systems technology is a vibrant and rapidly expanding field of academic research and business applications. By providing a new paradigm for designing and implementing systems for a complex, dynamic, and distributed environment where the common currency is negotiation, unplanned for events can be managed in a way that is beneficial to the overall system performance. Agent technology is greatly hyped as a panacea for the current ills of system design and development, but the developer is cautioned to be aware of the pitfalls inherent in any new and untested technology. The potential is there but the full benefit is yet to be realized. Agent technology will achieve its true potential only if users understand its business value.
