The study is divided in four chapters. More specifically τhe first chapter presents a picture of the global, European and Greek shipping, the actions of the EU, as well as the prospects of Greek shipping. It also presents the attitude of Greece towards accidents, the international conventions and maritime safety regulations, the developments in the shipbuilding technology and their economic importance. The second chapter analyzes the safety in the marine environment for the safe operation of ships and the protection of marine environment. It also examines the human factor in relation to maritime accidents and the safety crewing of ships. In the third chapter is calculated the loss of human life from maritime accidents and the fourth chapter of our study is application of the indicator GOSS by the Greek data. The study ends with conclusions.
