Abstract
This thesis treats the issue of implementing information systems (IS) in general and of management (MIS) in particular in the maritime industry. The thesis begins with a reference to the modern business environment. The importance of communication and communication technologies is shown and the role of information and the emphasized. Then, information technology (IT) is presented as are its effects in economy and impact on organizations, individuals and society. Finally, the concept of information support (IT Support) is introduced and its impact on an organization’s operation is explained. Thereinafter, we introduce the concept of an information system. Following their course through history, their capabilities and potential are established, they are classified and their every-day applications are mentioned. The architecture and infrastructure of an information system is then illustrated and the importance of the IS Department and chief information officer are explained. The chapter ends with the predicted future developments for information technology. The next chapter deals with managing information system security. The vulnerability of information systems is emphasized, its threats classified and ways of dealing with this are presented. Moreover, the consequences of such a breach of an information system are stressed in order to point out how important its protection is. The final chapter demonstrates how an information system can be used in an organization. Specifically, the implementation of an “off the shelf” information system is depicted along with the methodology for designing a new, organization-customized information system.
