This master’s thesis focuses on the design and development of ECOPOLIS, a hybrid cooperative board game for fifth- and sixth-grade primary school students, aimed at supporting Environmental Education and Education for Sustainable Development. The game draws on the principles of Game-Based Learning, combining a physical board game environment with Augmented Reality (AR) technology and interactive digital content delivered through the ARTutor platform and H5P activities.
In ECOPOLIS, students work as members of a team and are challenged to address a city’s environmental issues by making collective decisions and observing their impact on the game’s shared resources and indicators. Through this process, the game aims to support students’ understanding of environmental concepts while fostering collaboration, communication, environmental responsibility, and collective decision-making.
As part of the thesis, a formative evaluation of the game design was conducted, leading to several improvements in both the physical and digital components of the prototype. Artificial Intelligence tools were also used in a supportive capacity throughout the creative and design process. ECOPOLIS constitutes an educational prototype whose next stage of development involves a pilot implementation in an authentic school setting, aimed at exploring its functionality, user experience, and potential educational use in practice.
