In the contemporary digital era, higher education students constitute a vulnerable group against phishing attacks, as traditional educational approaches do not adequately address the development of cybersecurity skills. To address this gap, the present thesis designed and developed the digital course «Phishing 360: From Emotion to Data» on the Wix platform, pedagogically grounded in the theory of Self-Regulated Learning (SRL).
The units and activities of the course are structured around the three phases of the model: in the forethought phase, students set goals and strategies for the cybersecurity activities; in the performance phase, they carry out the activities, such as the analysis of phishing scenarios, monitoring their progress; and in the self-reflection phase, they evaluate the outcome, identifying the factors of achievement or non-achievement of their goals.
The SRL framework is embedded within a STEAM learning environment, which combines the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics, cultivating creativity, problem-solving and collaboration through authentic scenarios (case studies) of phishing. In parallel, supportive Artificial Intelligence tools, such as a digital assistant (AI avatar), enhance the guidance of students.
The thesis constitutes a design proposal and does not include implementation and evaluation on an actual sample of students. However, a methodological framework is presented for its future evaluation, with three research questions concerning cognitive engagement, metacognitive monitoring and perspective taking. The contribution of the study lies in the creation of a pedagogical framework that combines Self-Regulated Learning, STEAM and supportive Artificial Intelligence tools, for the cultivation of cybersecurity skills in higher education.
