Nowadays, efforts are being made to secure and uphold children’s rights, with international organizations making a significant contribution to this cause, it can be observed that in many countries laws intended to protect children are violated. Many children are unaware of their rights and schools are called upon to educate them about their rights as part of the school curriculum. To achieve this goal, students need to understand the consequences of the absence of such laws and identify signs of their violation. However, teaching at schools remains a passive process. For this reason, STEAM education was incorporated into the framework of the present teaching scenario, combined with elements of motivation and gamification, to facilitate understanding through active engagement.
The teaching scenario was based on the social constructivism learning theory and, more specifically, on the STEAM educational approach, which was employed to design experiential learning activities. The design was grounded in the ARCS motivational pedagogical design model, which aims to motivate learners to participate actively. Strategies aligned with the ARCS model were incorporated throughout all phases of educational escape room, while gamification were simultaneously employed to enhance learner engagement. Furthermore, the digital agent “Fineas” played a significant role in the learning process as part of the gamification strategy, so as to enhance learners’ sense of interaction with the digital rooms.
The educational escape room “The Guardians of Rights” was designed for children aged 9-10, with the aim of teaching them about their rights through active participation, collaboration, communication and critical thinking. The present teaching scenario constitutes an innovative proposal for implementation in the fourth grade of primary school and its future implementation is recommended.
