This thesis examines the relationship between consumer protection and business development through the lens of personal data protection, privacy rights and regulatory challenges. Its purpose is to explain how data protection operates both as a mechanism for safeguarding consumers and as a strategic resource for firms in the digital economy. The study employed a literature-based methodology built on the analysis of academic articles, European and Greek legal texts, regulatory instruments, supervisory reports, and recent empirical studies. The findings show that personal data have evolved from a narrow legal category into a dynamic, multilayered, and economically valuable resource shaped by Big Data, artificial intelligence, connected devices, and predictive analytics. The analysis also showed that the GDPR created a more coherent framework of rights, obligations, accountability, and enforcement, while complementary European instruments expanded privacy governance into broader fields of digital regulation. In addition, the study found that consumer trust grows through transparency, security, responsible data management, and effective corporate communication. Compliance generates economic pressures, especially for smaller firms, yet it also supports reputation, resilience, innovation, and long-term competitiveness. Overall, the thesis concludes that data protection functions as a foundation of sustainable, credible and responsible business development in contemporary digital markets.
