This dissertation examines the management of maritime imports in Greece and highlights the critical role of the freight forwarder within the contemporary supply chain. Maritime transport remains a fundamental pillar of international trade, while Greece holds a particularly important position due to its geographical location, maritime tradition and the strategic role of the Port of Piraeus as a gateway for trade and distribution flows. In this context, the effective organization of import operations, accurate document management and compliance with customs and regulatory requirements are decisive factors affecting cost, time and reliability. The study adopts a qualitative, literature-based approach and draws on secondary sources, including academic articles, books, reports by international organizations and regulatory texts. Through this synthesis, the dissertation examines the place of maritime transport in supply chain management, the functions and responsibilities of the freight forwarder, the core stages of maritime import procedures, the main required documents, customs obligations and the application of Incoterms rules. At the same time, it discusses contemporary developments such as digitalization, sustainability and supply chain resilience. The findings show that maritime import management is not a simple linear sequence of tasks but a dynamic system of interdependent stages, in which even minor failures in documentation, coordination or timely information sharing may result in delays and additional costs. The freight forwarder emerges as a key operational coordinator who contributes to transport planning, document control, communication among stakeholders and the reduction of uncertainty. Overall, the dissertation concludes that improving maritime import management requires a combination of organizational capability, digital tools, timely information and specialized expertise, while also identifying directions for future research and practical application in the Greek context.
