This MSc thesis investigates climate change and environmental effects associated with the energy transition and the lignite phase-out process in the Kozani–Ptolemaida region during the period 1980–2025. Particular emphasis is placed on the long-term evolution of key meteorological parameters and on assessing changes resulting from the gradual decline in lignite activities and the parallel development of Renewable Energy Sources (RES).
The methodological approach was based on the analysis of time-series and geospatial data, using historical meteorological records from monitoring networks and reliable databases, as well as electricity generation data from lignite-fired power plants and photovoltaic stations. In addition, a spatial analysis of microclimatic characteristics was carried out using data from meteorological stations located within the Regional Unit of Kozani. Correlations between altitude, temperature, precipitation and energy production were also investigated.
The results revealed significant spatial and temporal variability of climatic parameters across the study area, reflecting both the effects of climate change and the influence of the distinct geomorphological characteristics of the Western Macedonia basin. Furthermore, differences among the individual meteorological stations were identified, while the analysis of energy data highlighted a gradual decline in lignite-based electricity generation and an increasing contribution of RES to the energy mix. The relationships between energy production and meteorological variables indicate interactions between climatic and energy processes that require further investigation.
Overall, the study contributes to a better understanding of the interactions among climate change, land-use changes and energy transition in Western Macedonia, providing useful insights for sustainable development policies and the management of regions undergoing post-lignite transition.
