This thesis deals with the financial analysis of the energy company Elpedison, through the calculation and critical analysis of financial ratios. The purpose of this analysis is to assess the financial position and operational efficiency of the company under consideration. The financial analysis was carried out in a theoretical and practical context and it is noted that the data of the published financial statements were used in combination with the characteristics of the energy sector in the Greek economy, but also at an international level.
Financial analysis is an important method of administrative evaluation and utilization of strategic information, especially in the energy sector, which operates under a strict regulatory framework and faces increased investment risks. Therefore, ratios are a basic means of capturing, correlating and interpreting the financial data of a company, allowing the extraction of useful information.
It is noted that the analysis through the ratios results from the calculation and study of specific financial statement figures, in order to evaluate the liquidity, profitability, capital structure, debt burden and overall the viability and assessment of the future of the company. Their combined interpretation and study is particularly important, as the performance of an energy company is directly affected by geopolitical developments that bring about sharp fluctuations in the prices of energy goods, by fiscal developments, but also by technological transformations.
Finally, the paper aims to highlight the usefulness of financial indicators as a means of supporting administrative decisions, while highlighting the limitations that arise. Furthermore, it is estimated that a further study, regarding the strategy of companies in the sector regarding acquisitions, mergers and absorptions of energy companies, as well as the development of dynamic models, would be helpful in the decision-making of the parties involved.
