This master’s thesis undertakes an empirical investigation of the role and challenges of women in Greek shipping, adopting a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected through a questionnaire, which yielded responses from 22 women employed in the Greek maritime sector. Despite its small size, the sample enabled an initial exploratory mapping of the professional lives of women employed in various maritime occupations in Greece.
The findings indicate significant systemic challenges: gender-based discrimination, verbal or physical harassment, reduced opportunities for career advancement and reduced salaries compared to male peers, and difficulties in balancing personal and professional life. Furthermore, more than half of the participants were unsure whether gender equality policies existed within their organizations, and the majority had received no training on diversity or on combating harassment. The respondents demonstrated a high level of education and strong leadership ambition.
The thesis concludes with practical recommendations to shipping companies and policy makers, such as the adoption of explicit gender equality policies, mentoring programs, diversity training, and family-friendly policies.
