The shipping industry is characterized by complexity, an international regulatory framework, and asymmetric information. These conditions frequently engender agency conflicts among shipowners, ship managers, charterers, brokers, and crew. This paper provides a systemic analysis of agency costs within the maritime sector and examines the determinants of agency costs, such as fleet size, fleet complexity, information quality, regulatory compliance, and technology. Employing theoretical and economic analysis, this study focuses on the key elements of agency costs, proposing ways to address agency conflicts, such as the implementation of blockchain technologies and the creation of incentives for managers and crew. The findings contribute to the resolution of agency conflicts in shipping by increasing transparency and improving the efficient ship management practices.
