Abstract

This diploma thesis focuses on the enhancement of the intangible cultural heritage (ICH) of the village of Velanidia, Laconia, through the development of a digital, virtual folklore museum. This project is framed within the context of "New Museology", which redefines the role of the museum, moving beyond its traditional form to function as a cultural institution that serves the community. The primary objective of this work is the documentation, preservation, and interpretation of local cultural elements—such as traditions, customs, narratives, and artifacts of use—leveraging the capabilities offered by contemporary digital technology. The selection of this particular location was based on the necessity of documenting and representing its cultural heritage, aligning with the principles of locality and community participation as advocated by the ecomuseum models. The endeavor seeks to create an open digital space where visitors can navigate, interact, and experience elements of the local culture, irrespective of their geographical location. Simultaneously, the thesis highlights the role of digital technology as a tool for museum interpretation and cultural mediation, contributing to the enrichment of the cultural experience and public engagement. Technology is presented not merely as a means of documentation, but as a platform for the transference of intangible cultural knowledge. Through digital interpretation, experiential learning is fostered, collective memory is activated, and a dynamic, participatory cultural narrative is developed. The digital folklore museum functions not only as a means of preserving cultural heritage but also as a vehicle for social cohesion, empowering the local community and cultivating intercultural dialogue through new forms of cultural accessibility.
