This study examines digital illiteracy and highlights the key role of education in its prevention and effective management. The theoretical aspect explores the evolution of literacy from traditional literacy to multiliteracies, with emphasis on digital, information, and critical literacy. It also addresses social inequalities, cultural capital, educational policies, and the emerging challenges posed by media, the digital divide, and artificial intelligence. The empirical part presents the results of a quantitative study involving 157 participants. The findings indicate that participants demonstrate high levels of basic digital access and functional digital skills, but lower performance in more complex competencies, such as the critical evaluation of information and the collaborative use of digital tools. The study concludes that education should cultivate digital literacy in a comprehensive manner, thereby promoting equality, participation, and democratic citizenship in contemporary digital society.
