This paper examines the operational efficiency, environmental performance and the degree of contribution of the coastal shipping connections of Thassos to sustainable island development and the strengthening of territorial cohesion with mainland Greece. The methodological approach was based on the creation and calculation of composite indicators – such as the Modal Accessibility Ratio (MAR), the Time Accessibility Index (TAI), the Transport Equivalent Threshold (TET) and the Daily Time Window Coverage (DTWC) – which were applied to real technical, operational, environmental and demographic data. In addition, the OECD (2008) and the European Commission (2008) indicator evaluation framework was utilized, in combination with ELSTAT statistics and specialized studies on coastal shipping.
The results revealed significant structural weaknesses, such as seasonality in the frequency of routes, low energy efficiency of the ships (average age 23,3 years), and limited operational accessibility outside the tourist season. The MAR and DTWC indices fluctuated at values below the operational thresholds in winter, while the TET index > 2,00 reflected strong transport inequality. Furthermore, the carbon footprint of the routes (116,8 g CO₂/pax-km) is characterized as incompatible with the objectives of the EU Green Deal. The work concludes with a set of multi level proposals concerning the rescheduling of routes, the upgrading of the fleet with hybrid or LNG technologies, the development of cold ironing port infrastructure, and the institutional
integration of Thassos into the Island Transport Equivalent (ITE) mechanism.
The research contribution consists in the documented connection of transport performance indicators with development planning and territorial cohesion in island environments.
