This study explores the construction of hegemonic narratives surrounding ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) in the maritime industry, combining Laclau and Mouffe’s theory of hegemony with the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework of Fairclough, Wodak, and van Dijk. Through the qualitative examination of 17 sustainability and ESG reports published by major shipping companies in 2023, the research investigates how ESG operates as an empty signifier encompassing concepts such as sustainability, decarbonization, innovation, and responsibility—forming chains of equivalence that render sustainability discourse hegemonic. The interpretive methodology focuses on the processes of legitimation, naturalization, and marginalization of competing narratives. Findings reveal five dominant storylines: technological transition, compliance as competitiveness, safety and social responsibility, transparency and governance, and collaborative ecosystems. ESG emerges both as a consensus-building framework uniting diverse corporate and institutional interests and as a political practice shaping legitimacy and strategic orientation in global shipping. The study contributes to the theoretical understanding of how corporate discourses intersect with broader political and ideological dynamics, positioning maritime ESG communication as a key site for the production of global sustainability hegemonies.
