This thesis examines how to outline and adopt innovative business models for the Smart Cities of the future. Smart Cities are intelligent and efficient communities and ecosystems employing digital technologies to respond to a growing waste of resources, unsustainable environmental impact, and inefficiency in traditional processes. Considering the greatest benefits of Smart Cities on economies, societies, and environment we examine specific use cases on how to implement profitable business models for Smart Cities of the future. To monitor and control such implementations and address the respective challenges a reorientation of the available strategies and technologies is at hand. In this regard, the contribution of accounting and Smart Accounting Information Systems is worth mentioning. The importance of accounting rests in its worth to both internal and external users of the Smart City’s governance scheme. The vitality of accounting information is not only substantial for proprietors, vendors, managers and employees but also to the investors, financers, government and regulatory institutions. On this paper we dive into the Smart technology as a key piece of the solution, and we refer to financing and accounting tools available to help cities and regional governments implement successful smart city projects.
