This dissertation studies the structural problems of carbon markets, both compliance and voluntary, with the aim of evaluating their ability to support the participation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in business activities. Firstly, the institutional framework and its key instruments, such as carbon pricing and emissions trading mechanisms, are presented as tools used to confront climate change. Moreover, the differences between compliance and voluntary markets are analyzed, highlighting their roles in environmental action. In this context, the study focuses on SMEs in order to identify the institutional, technological and economic challenges they face, as well as their internal weaknesses that hinder their entry into carbon markets. Furthermore, the concept of digitalization is introduced as a supportive mechanism for improving SMEs’ access to carbon markets. Finally, Greenwashing and Greenhushing are highlighted as unethical strategies, and the need for a holistic approach is emphasized through institutional, technological and business-oriented perspectives.
