The purpose of this study is to examine the framework of Law 2121/1993 of Intellectual Property, with regard to the field of the Visual Arts. In the first chapter, a concise overview of key points of interest is provided along with a brief historical background. Subsequently, the challenges faced by the Law and its implementation are presented, especially under the lens of the digital era in which we now live. In the second chapter, three Bequests of Greek Visual Artists are discussed as case studies, focusing both on their operation and on the way in which the Intellectual Property Law is applied in relation to these institutions. The chapter concludes with a comparative analysis among them. The third chapter comments on additional forms of visual arts, such as performance art, video art, and photography — selected based on the difficulties their creators face in protecting their intellectual property rights. An extensive study and critical review of the Law follows, regarding its applicability within the framework in which the visual arts operate in Greece. Finally, the study presents contemporary trends, issues, and legal solutions concerning the protection of intellectual property rights of visual artists in modern Greece.
