This paper examines copyright law, focusing on both its conceptual foundations and the international and national legal frameworks. It explains copyright as a set of moral and economic rights granted to creators, defining what constitutes an original work, which works are protected or excluded, with particular reference to technological issues such as computer programs, databases, and websites. The study traces the historical development of copyright through international conventions (Statute of Anne, Berne Convention, Rome Convention, TRIPS, WIPO) and contrasts the two main systems of protection (European and Anglo-American).
It then analyzes Greek legislation, especially Law 2121/1993 and its amendments, which safeguard authors’ and related rights, establish limitations and duration of protection, and include special provisions for digital works. Special attention is given to technological protection measures, Articles 66A and 66B on circumvention and metadata alteration, as well as civil, criminal, and administrative sanctions. Finally, the paper discusses interim and judicial measures against infringements, particularly online, emphasizing the need for continuous legal adaptation to technological advances.Overall, the study highlights copyright as a constantly evolving institution that balances creators’ rights with public access to knowledge and culture, especially in the digital era.
