The rapid advancement of digital technologies and the diffusion of innovation across all levels of
economic activity have fundamentally reshaped the business environment, which is now
characterized by constant change, high uncertainty, and intense competition. In this context, digital
transformation is not a future option but an existing reality of paramount strategic importance, as
it transcends the mere adoption of tools, constituting a multidimensional process that combines
technological integration, organizational restructuring, and strategic reorientation.
The need for an in-depth understanding of this phenomenon makes the present study both
timely and essential, as it focuses on a comprehensive examination of digital transformation, from
its theoretical foundations to its practical manifestation within the Greek business community. The
preparation of this thesis draws on both foreign and Greek bibliographic sources, scholarly articles,
and information obtained from credible electronic resources, while the empirical part is based on
a specifically designed questionnaire. Regarding structure, despite the interconnection between
chapters, they have been organized in a manner that allows for their autonomous reading and
analysis as independent thematic units.
Specifically, Chapter 1 explores the concepts of entrepreneurship, technology, and
innovation. Through a historical and theoretical approach, it highlights their interdependence and
their role as catalytic drivers of socioeconomic change, while also presenting their evolution within
the framework of technological revolutions, thus forming the foundation for understanding the
modern digital era.
Chapter 2 maps the evolution of the digital economy into three distinct phases: the
electronic, the network-based, and the smart economy. It analyzes the development of technological infrastructures, the rise of platform-based ecosystems, network effects, and the shift
of value creation towards data driven business models. The chapter also examines the implications
of power concentration among a limited number of actors, as well as the regulatory, competitive,
social, political, and economic challenges arising from this new business structure.
Chapter 3 clarifies the concepts of digitization, digitalization, and digital transformation,
and presents the main theoretical approaches that explain the process of digital change. It examines
the technological, organizational, and external factors influencing its success, the role of dynamic
capabilities in the digital transformation process, and the changes it brings to key business
dimensions such as customer experience, supply chain, and internal operations. Τhe final section
of the chapter is devoted to the challenges and risks arising from digital transformation.
Finally, Chapter 4 presents how Greek enterprises experience digital transformation,
through an empirical survey conducted via a structured questionnaire. The analysis focuses on
advantages, barriers, levels of digital maturity, technological and organizational choices, as well
as the observed benefits, providing, among other things, the necessary empirical evidence to bridge
the theoretical framework with the business world.
