This master's thesis explores the digital transformation of the built environment, focusing on leveraging Building Information Modeling (BIM) systems to improve energy efficiency in existing buildings. The research is applied to the "Malcolm H. Wiener" building of the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, utilizing Autodesk Revit and Autodesk Insight software for energy analysis and scenario simulation.
The methodology involves creating an analytical energy model and conducting a sensitivity analysis, which revealed that for this specific modern building, building envelope interventions (insulation, glazing) have limited impact, whereas the optimization of HVAC systems and operating schedules is crucial. Furthermore, scenarios integrating photovoltaics and green roofs were examined by introducing custom factors to accurately quantify embodied and operational carbon. The results demonstrated that maximizing photovoltaic coverage and utilizing green roofs significantly contribute to reducing the carbon footprint and achieving climate neutrality.
