This thesis examines the semantic analysis of art with an emphasis on Greek painters, through the development of an ontology using linked data from Wikidata, SearchCulture.gr, and Semantics.gr. The ontology will be developed in Protégé, thereby producing a structured and unified knowledge system for representing and interconnecting information related to Greek painting. Semantic analysis enables in-depth interpretation of data, while ontologies contribute to the organization and categorization of knowledge. The data were collected from the previously mentioned sources, categorized, and integrated before being imported into Protégé. Through this process, a unified ontology was created, consisting of classes, properties, and relationships linking painters, artworks, and artistic movements, allowing for easier retrieval and interconnection of data. Furthermore, the thesis explores the use of the SPARQL language, which enables the execution of complex queries for targeted information retrieval, such as a painter’s works or the artistic movement they represent. The evaluation of the ontology focuses on its accuracy and completeness, and suggestions for future research are presented.
The aim of the thesis is to demonstrate that ontologies, combined with SPARQL queries, can enhance the management and understanding of cultural heritage, opening new perspectives for research and education in the field of art.
