Ανανεώσιμες πηγές ενέργειαςAbstract
The Renewable Energy Sources (RES) are a key pillar of sustainable development in Greece, as they contribute significantly to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the diversification of the energy mix and the reduction of dependence on fossil fuels. Greece, taking advantage of its rich natural potential, has made extensive investments in RES, with the result that electricity production from renewable sources now represents approximately 50% of total domestic production.
The wind energy holds a significant share, with an installed capacity exceeding 4,900 MW, placing the country among the leading powers in this sector in Europe. Solar energy is growing rapidly, with over 5,200 MW of installed capacity, taking advantage of Greece’s high sunshine. Hydropower plants continue to play a critical role, providing grid stability and supporting energy storage through pumped storage systems.
The investments in the RES sector exceed 5 billion euros, creating thousands of jobs and boosting economic growth. At the same time, the Greek government has set ambitious targets, such as achieving an 80% share of renewable sources in electricity generation by 2030. Although there are challenges, such as the need for grid modernization and social acceptance of projects, the development of energy storage and innovative technologies can contribute to overcoming these obstacles.
Finally, the shift towards RES is the only way for Greece to achieve sustainable development, ensuring energy security, environmental protection and economic prosperity. The combination of political initiatives, investments and technological development will determine the country’s role in the green energy transition of the coming decades.
