This study explores the design, implementation, and evaluation of an online course aimed at enhancing financial literacy among upper secondary school students (Grades 11–12) through realistic scenarios related to the tourism sector. The innovation of this course lies in the adoption of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) methodology, the systematic integration of digital tools and artificial intelligence, and the incorporation of gamification and storytelling elements.
The course was structured as a “learning pathway” with five stops at emblematic locations in Athens (Monastiraki, Ermou, Syntagma, Plaka, Acropolis). At each stop, students engaged with theoretical content, participated in activities using tools such as ChatGPT and Canva, and were assessed through authentic learning criteria. Activities included SWOT analysis, market and competition analysis, pricing strategies, branding development, digital campaign creation, storytelling, and final project presentation.
Data collection was conducted through questionnaires, classroom observations, and assessment of student outputs. Findings indicated that students significantly improved their understanding of key economic concepts, developed collaboration and critical thinking skills, and responded positively to gamification elements that enhanced motivation and engagement. The use of artificial intelligence was also highly valued, as it facilitated idea generation and supported student autonomy in the learning process.
In conclusion, the study confirms that combining PjBL, gamification, AI, and storytelling can constitute an effective and innovative pedagogical approach for teaching economic concepts in secondary education. Furthermore, the integration of cultural tourism elements added authenticity and experiential value to the learning process. Finally, the study highlights the need for further research with larger and more diverse samples, as well as applications in other subject areas, in order to gain deeper insights into the contribution of this approach to education.
