This thesis examines the role of Greece, the Eastern Mediterranean states, and the Middle East states through the prism of geopolitical changes, economic transformations, and energy security. The purpose of the thesis is to analyze how the energy transition, regional conflicts, and major powers (e.g., the U.S., Russia, China) affect Greece’s strategic position and its prospects as a pillar of stability and energy hub in the region, as well as the general future of neighboring states.
The first part presents the historical and cultural background that gives Greece the ability to function as a bridge between Europe and the Middle East. Then, the political and economic dimensions and major energy projects (pipelines, electrical interconnections, LNG infrastructure) are analyzed, which strengthen the country’s role in the European strategy of diversification from Russian fossil fuels.
Then, the paper focuses on the geopolitical dimension, examining the many and interesting cooperation schemes that have been created (such as the EMGF and the 3+1 scheme with the USA-Israel-Cyprus) as well as the confrontations with Turkey over maritime borders and Exclusive Economic Zones. This is followed by an analysis of the social impacts of these changes, such as migratory flows and the refugee future as well as the support provided by Greece in humanitarian aid to neighboring countries such as Syria and Lebanon. Finally, the main challenges and future directions are highlighted: the instability in Syria, which significantly shapes geopolitical developments in the region, the threats faced by the minorities of the region, climate change and natural disasters, as well as the need for continuous diplomacy and de-reliance on fossil fuels. The paper concludes that Greece, despite the difficulties, has the potential to establish itself as a strategic pillar in the Eastern Mediterranean, combining its historical heritage with modern geoeconomic and geopolitical reality.
