How local / circular production strengthens urban resilience – The case of urban /peri-urban agriculture

Abstract

This topic dealt with the ways in which local-circular production enhances the resilience of cities, while case studies were analyzed regarding urban and peri-urban agriculture. The study was completed through five chapters, where more specifically, resilient cities were initially defined and analyzed as well as the challenges that exist in the light of climate change, while conceptual and determining factors for shaping resilient cities were also given. Then, reference was made to the linear and circular production chain, while emphasis was given to the food sector in relation to urban and peri-urban agriculture. The relationship between producer and consumer was examined, as well as food safety in the present era. Emphasis was given to smart agriculture and the development of digital innovations in this sector. There was also talk about supported agriculture in terms of traceability and transparency, as well as the connection to food and the supply chain as well as security conditions, emphasizing the importance of having edible parks and vegetable gardens as well as community roofs. Then, the resilience of cities was linked to local production and circularity. Specific indicators were recorded that demonstrate the connection of resilience - circularity. Specific case studies related to the topic under study were developed, highlighting the topic better. The study concluded that local food production in urban areas reconnects residents with the land and production, promoting inclusion, and awareness of food, as well as the use of technical tools such as heat storage systems, digital yield monitoring and mapping of suitable areas can increase the sustainability of the development of urban agriculture, which is a tool for political, environmental and social strategies.
