This study examines how sustainability can be integrated in project management. It looks at how Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can be used to keep track and support sustainability in projects. The main objective is to enhance the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) to include sustainability. A literature review used to search for relevant information from academic articles, reports and professional guidelines to collect relevant information and identify gaps between theory and practice.
Moreover, found that while sustainability is widely discussed, it is still not fully implemented in real projects. To deal with this problem, this research proposes two new project management processes: ‘Plan Sustainability Management’ and ‘Assess Sustainability Performance’ and enhance the existing process ‘Plan Stakeholder Engagement’.
These processes align with both the 6th and 7th editions of PMBOK and offer a practical way to include sustainability in project planning, monitoring and controlling. Additionally, after a review of all 169 SDG targets, a set of indicators was chosen that can be applied to a wide range of project types and organizations relevant with project management.
Overall, this research highlights the importance of making sustainability a key part of project management. It also emphasizes the role of stakeholder engagement, the expected evolution of PMBOK (especially the 8th edition) and the value of tools development to track sustainability progress across projects.
