Abstract

This study attempts to examine the relationship between cultural promotion and alternative tourism through the use of digital content, with a focus on the Asterousia Mountains. Specifically, it begins by presenting the concept and various forms of cultural heritage, as well as its contribution to local development. The research then explores alternative forms of tourism and the ways in which a smooth transition can be achieved from mass tourism—which has burdened many regions—to a more sustainable approach through specific alternative types, such as cultural, religious, agritourism, ecotourism, and others. This section also analyzes the contribution of digital technology to the promotion of a tourist destination. The creation of digital content aims to support both the cultural enhancement and the tourism promotion of the Asterousia Mountains, which serve as the case study in this postgraduate dissertation. The audiovisual work—namely, the video—was chosen as the main form of digital content to highlight and promote the Asterousia region and is titled “Asterousia Mountains: A Destination of Authentic Experience.” It seeks to showcase both the natural landscapes and the cultural identity of the area. This video functions as a proposal for the cultural and touristic promotion of the Asterousia Mountains, offering the potential to positively influence the development of local communities in the region without—according to the present research—compromising the cultural identity of the place and its inhabitants.
