This paper examines public spending in income redistribution that leads in poverty alleviation. It analyzes the significance of public spending as a fiscal policy tool and its impact on household income growth achieved through economic growth, economic stabilization and social justice. Through social benefits and investments in infrastructure, education, and health, public spending can reduce economic inequalities and enhance social cohesion.
The paper highlights the significant contribution of progressive taxes, social benefits, and subsidies in reducing poverty. Special attention is given to the state of poverty in Greece, where high levels of poverty following the 2008 economic crisis make public spending crucial for supporting vulnerable groups. Regional inequalities and the effectiveness of poverty reduction policies are thoroughly analyzed, with recommendations for improving targeting and management of public resources.
Challenges in managing public spending, such as inefficient management and corruption, are emphasized, along with the need for transparency and accountability. Finally, the paper concludes with proposals to enhance the effectiveness of public spending, strengthen social cohesion, and achieve sustainable development through targeted and transparent policies.
