Financial literacy is internationally recognized as a critical 21st-century skill—essential for individuals' economic autonomy and the promotion of economic well-being on both personal and societal levels, as it contributes to financial stability and sustainable economic development by enhancing economic resilience. Researchers and policymakers advocate that schools are the most appropriate setting for delivering financial education, emphasizing the importance of starting early, from the first school years.
Within the framework of the National Strategy for Financial Literacy, the introduction of financial education programs in elementary schools was deemed necessary. This study, recognizing the pivotal role that teachers play in the successful implementation of this strategy, examines financial education in early childhood by focusing on the views, practices, and proposals of primary school teachers. For the research, a qualitative methodology was adopted, with the use of semi-structured interviews as the primary data collection tool, while thematic analysis was applied to process the research data.
The findings indicate that teachers acknowledge the numerous benefits of financial education in primary schools; however, they also express a sense of inadequacy in teaching the subject and a strong need for comprehensive professional development. The research reveals both the diversity in the provision of financial education and the obstacles that hinder its integration into the school curriculum, underscoring the need for more effective educational policies. Finally, a holistic approach is proposed—one that combines the development of practical skills with an understanding of the broader socio-economic context, with particular emphasis on enhancing teacher training and providing appropriate educational materials.
