This study aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the professional burnout experienced by secondary school teachers in Greece and to identify strategies to enhance their professional well-being. In an era of ever-increasing demands on the quality of education, teachers are faced with numerous challenges that often exceed their capabilities.
These pressures, combined with a lack of support and recognition, create an environment conducive to emotional and physical exhaustion. Remarkably, a significant proportion of participants experience some degree of emotional exhaustion, which has a direct impact on both students and the overall quality of education, as exhausted teachers struggle to effectively inspire and guide their students. Notably, divorced teachers report the highest levels of emotional exhaustion, revealing the challenges associated with their family circumstances. Analysis of the factors contributing to professional burnout suggests that working conditions - such as juggling administrative duties with teaching and a lack of collaboration with parents - are critical stressors. Conversely, support from colleagues and the development of problem-solving skills emerge as fundamental to improving teachers' psychological resilience. This research highlights key factors that can improve teachers' working conditions and strengthen support within the school environment.
The proposed strategies aim to ensure a healthy and productive education system in Greece
by positioning professional well-being not only as a personal issue but also as a pressing social need.
