Biology in schools in Europe is one of the main foundations of the curriculum in
each country. It aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the natural
processes and living organisms that are the core of life. In the context of teaching,
students examine the main topics related to Biology, such as cell biology, genetics,
ecology, anatomy and physiology, as well as the interactions between organisms and
the environment. Moving on to the Secondary Education level, the subject allows
students to develop scientific thinking and understand the connection between
biological processes and their everyday experiences. Biology education encourages
environmental consciousness and the importance of sustainability, while promoting
awareness of the importance of biomedical and environmental challenges.
The approach to educational processes concerning the subject of Biology differs
from country to country. In this paper, the approach that prevails in schools in Germany,
Finland, Sweden, France and Greece will be studied. The relationship of influence
between student and teaching method and the factors that determine it are also
investigated, as well as the position that a biologist can occupy in the Greek labor
market. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of teaching the subject of Biology as
it is done in Greek schools are analyzed through qualitative research, using the method
of interviews with Biology teachers.
The results showed that the teaching methods and curriculum of Greek schools
undoubtedly need improvement. As it became clear, the part of the educational
process that concerns the experimental part, textbooks and differentiated learning is
not so favored by the higher authorities but is more based on the passion of the
teachers themselves. However, the majority of the educational community agrees with
the flow of the taught chapters and the assessment methods. In conclusion, the
necessity of improving the educational process regarding the Biology course in Greek
schools is perceived with the aim of increasingly better integration of students into the
health sciences departments of universities and the production of qualified biologists
for the labor market.
