The Rare Earth Elements (REE) are 17 metals that, due to their electronic structure, have special physical and chemical properties. These include the 15 Lanthanides as well as the elements Yttrium and Scandium. Due to their properties, they are essential in many applications of modern technology and have become a geopolitical advantage for the countries that have them. Many countries have REE deposits, but China has almost a monopoly on REE production, as it currently holds 55% of the global market (1).
China's one-dimensional reliance on REEs, especially after Russia's natural gas debacle, has led Europe and the US to make political choices to support exploration of alternative sources in other locations. Also supported are studies to limit the environmental impacts caused by the extraction and processing of these ores.
In Greece due to its rich geological structure, there are indications of REE deposits. They have been identified by surveys in Northern Greece such as on the coastal front and on the continental shelf of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (2). Also promising indications to have been identified in the coastal zones of the Cyclades and in the bauxite deposits in Central Greece. However, it must be pointed out that further systematic research is required to ascertain whether these REE mineralogies are economically exploitable and environmentally manageable. Finally, an important factor is the geopolitical importance of REEs at the local level, with what this means for stability in the region.
